The growing awareness of nutritional supplements and preventive health care options is transforming people’s consumption of health food and drugs. According to a 2013 Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) consumer survey, 68% of U.S. adults reported taking a dietary supplement. As for specific products, multivitamins were the most popular supplement (52% reported taking it in the past 12 months), followed by vitamin D (20%), omega-3/fish oil (19%), calcium (18%) and vitamin C (17%).

U.S. supplement sales reached $32.5 billion in 2012 a 7.5% growth, according to Nutrition Business Journal, Boulder, CO. Vitamins remained the largest supplement category (with sales of $10.6 billion, up 5.4%), ahead of specialty supplements ($6.1 billion, up 8.2%), herbs/botanicals ($5.6 billion, up 5.5%) and minerals ($2.4 billion, up 3.7%). It’s become increasingly clear that more consumers are relying on natural products, organic food, and nutritional supplements for health and wellness management.
